Augustinus-Lexikon Bibliography Database

The same care and dependability that many reviewers have praised in the fascicles of the Augustinus-Lexikon mark the bibliographies provided with the articles there. They deserve to be made available alongside the „Database of Augustinian Scholarly Literature“ from the CAG disk as a further powerful tool for research in Augustinian studies.

The „Augustinus-Lexikon Bibliography Database“ serves purposes different from those of the CAG database. It collects in alphabetical order all the publications mentioned to date in the Lexikon’s articles. Thus, since the articles regularly discuss pre-Augustinian material, the Bibliography is not limited to Augustinian material. The Bibliography selects, moreover, the most relevant Augustinian material from the CAG database for each article – so, e.g., for the word ecclesia the CAG database has over 1500 titles, but the corresponding article in the Lexikon limits itself to only 132 items mentioned. The Bibliography is thus both quantitatively and qualitatively selective. It offers the benefit its precision and reliability for direct access on the Internet.

The Bibliography was established by Karl Heinz Chelius and Christiane von Pfeil. The data in it will be constantly expanded as the Augustinus-Lexikon publishes new articles (just as the CAG database is constantly updated as well). At the outset, the Bibliography will be arranged by author of the materials cited, but additional arrangements (e.g., by title, by article keywords of the Lexikon, etc.) will be added later.
